All You Should Know About a Puppy Breeder

Puppies, the softest and most squeezable furballs in all of creation. This is why it’s so important to find a reputable breeder that can put your mind at ease. Don’t get caught up in the hype of online pet shops and pet websites who may seem like they’re one click away to getting your new best friend. It really isn’t.

First and foremost, you should ask yourself some important questions. What kind of dog would I like to have? Would I like a lap dog, a cuddly companion or something more energetic? Bigger dogs need more space and exercise, are they suited to my lifestyle? Do I want a puppy with the full package i.e fully vaccinated, wormed and chipped or would I prefer an older dog? The list goes on.

If you have decided the type of dog that’s right for you then it’s time to find a breeder. A reputable breeder will be looking for a reliable, loving, healthy individual. The puppy should look bright eyed and healthy with a firm body and shiny feathers, not dried out and lethargic.

Most breeders can be found online via online pet shops. There’s an overlap between these pet shops and the ones on websites offering ‘puppy brokers’ or ‘puppy finders’. How do you know if they are legitimate? Well it’s all about references, firstly they should say something like: “our dogs have long lives” or “our dogs are lived in their entirety”. If the breeder is advertising matches without having met the prospective buyers or seeing their home or yard it should raise alarm bells immediately.

There are many websites offering to match up prospective buyers with breeders they have not met, which is a real concern. Clients can’t see these dogs until they have purchased it and the breeder needs to know some basic information which may include the price of your deposit. Yes, many chihuahua puppy rooms are set up by someone considering breeding their dog as a money-making venture. That’s why it’s important for reputable breeders to ask questions about their families and lifestyles, so they can find them the right fit.

The next thing to consider is transport costs. This can be pricey so be sure you know the cost from start and finish point before committing yourself. If you live somewhere warm and it’s a short trip you may be able to pick the pup up yourself, this is also a good idea if the breeder is far away. It’s always worth asking if they offer a return policy so that if you’re not completely satisfied with your new addition, you can exchange it for another puppy. If they are not willing to do this then be sure to write the details down and ask for a written refund guarantee.

Of course there are many reputable breeders out there but just because the breeder has been recommended by someone on Facebook doesn’t guarantee their credentials. Online reviews are really important as well as checking references from previous customers and making sure payment terms are clear.
